Several unique terms and phrases describe the features of hardware we review on this site, some easier to grasp than others. This list briefly defines terms relevant to Movie and TV Filtering.
Ratings Features SetMovie filtering technology edits offensive dialog such as curse words and sexually charged language as well as scenes such as sexual situations and extreme violence (television filtering technology only filters out offensive dialog). Some movie filtering products only filters out offensive dialog, while others filter dialog and scenes. Settings for both dialog and scenes usually include a ratings scale from low to high. A high setting allows more curse words, violence and sexual content and a low setting allows little to none. Parental control settings usually include tolerant, moderate or strict and most filtering products have a password option for parents. Ease of Use Navigating the filtering product’s menu options is easy through the remote control while the television screen displays all menu options. If a remote control is not included, the product’s front panel controls provide access to menu options. Multiple Languages The movie will mute the English dialog and replace it with a foreign language voice–over. Subtitles Letterbox/Widescreen The picture is wider and the height is shorter to mimic a movie theatre screen. Standard The picture is compressed to fit the television screen. Video Formats DVD Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc. DVD-R DVD–Readable is a non–recordable DVD. DVD-RW DVD–ReWritable is a recordable DVD. VCD Video compact disc; uses MPEG to store video and audio. SVCD Super video CD; uses MPEG to store video and audio. SVCD is higher quality than VCD. VHS Video Home System. An analog video format in the form of cassette tapes used in VCRs (video cassette DivX Video compression format. Audio & Picture Formats CD Compact Disc used for audio files. CD-R CD–Recordable is used to record files, but they cannot be erased. CD-RW CD–ReWritable is used to record and erase files many times. MP3 Audio compression file. JPEG Image compression file. WMA Windows Media Audio file. Filter Options Filtered Dialog Edited dialog such as curse words, sexually charged language and vain reference to a Deity. Filtered Scenes. Edited scenes that contain excessive violence and sexual situations. Replacement Captions Closed–captioned text with innocuous words and phrases that replace muted dialog. Mute Dialog without sound. Rating Limits Parental settings that determine the allowed level of violence or sexual content. Password Protected The movie filtering device is protected with a password so children can’t reset the rating limits. Lock Device The filtering device is disabled until a password is entered. Television The filtering device will work with television programming. DVDs The filtering device will work with DVDs. VCRs The filtering device will work with VHS videos. Filtered Scenes Moderate Violence A level of violence in PG and PG–13 rated movies and sometimes TV–14 television ratings. Graphic Violence A level of violence in R and NC–17 rated movies as well as TV–14 and TV–MA television ratings. Disturbing Images A level of violence or imagery in R and NC–17 rated movies that is too explicit for regular television. Sensual Content Content in PG and PG–13 rated movies and sometimes TV–14 television ratings. Crude Sexual Content Content in R and NC–17 rated movies as well as TV–14 and TV–MA television ratings. Nudity Content in R and NC–17 rated movies as well as TV–14 and TV–MA television ratings. Explicit Sexual Situations Content in R and NC–17 rated movies, which is too explicit for regular television. Filtered Language Vain reference to Deity The filtering technology will edit out crude references and swear words about a Deity. Crude Language & Humor Descriptions or jokes about sexual situations or other crude subjects. Ethnic and Social Slurs Cruel and offensive racial, ethnic and social slurs. Cursing Common terms of minor profanity such as those in a PG or PG–13 movie. Strong Profanity Common terms of strong profanity such as those in some R rated and NC–17 movies. Graphic Vulgarity Common terms of intense profanity and variations of the profane words. Also includes vulgar descriptions with profanity and long streams of profane language. Filtered Dialog Settings Off This setting will play all content. Tolerant For adult viewers. Allows most profanity, racial slurs and sexually charged language. Moderate For older teens. Allows a small amount of profanity, racial slurs and sexually charged language. Strict For young children. This setting will edit all profanity, racial slurs and sexually charged language. Word Specific Filters out specific words. Sexual References Filters out sexual terms of the male and female anatomy as well as descriptions of sex. Religious Programming This setting turns off part of the filtering so references to Deity are not muted during religious programming. Block Settings Block Channels The blocking device will block out specific television channels. Block Based on TV Ratings Any television programming with a specific rating will be blocked. Block Based on Movie Ratings A movie with a specific rating will be blocked. Block by Movie Title Movies are blocked based on their titles. Timer Block Channels can be blocked during certain times of the day. Password Protected No one can change the block settings without a password.
